Help and Frequently Asked Questions - Using the site/Troubleshooting
If you see no map displayed, but do see the navigation arrows, like in the following example:-
Your ad-blocking software has blocked the map image, mistakenly thinking it to be an advert. Certain popular home security suites/firewall suites do this. In order to rectify the problem, you will need to reconfigure the software not to filter our site. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide support for third-party programs.
If you cannot see a map, and get "red x's" to indicate that the image cannot be loaded, as shown in the example below:-
It is likely that your firewall has blocked http://www.streetmap.com or the IP address 220.127.116.11 (this is more common amongst corporate users). If this is the case, please ask your technical department to reconfigure your firewall to accept images from this location.
If you are using Zone Alarm and Mozilla/Firefox on Windows XP, you will need to disable Zone Alarm for our website (this does not occur if you use Internet Explorer or Opera instead). Please refer to their website for details on how to do this.
There is a setting in the Gecko based browsers which blocks images not originating from the "originating site". Streetmap in fact uses 2 ISP's and thus this feature blocks many of the images- most importantly the map images. These browsers also enable you to make exceptions, however, and you may wish to do that for our sites- www.streetmap.co.uk, www.streetmap.com, and http://18.104.22.168
In FireFox the setting is in Tools> Options> Web features.
Occasionally, firewalls and ad-blocking software identify the icon as an advert. The software in question should therefore be reconfigured to allow the icon to be shown. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide support for third-party programs.
This may be a symptom of a larger problem, outlined here.

If a results page is displayed, but you see no map, please refer to this topic.
This is because our maps show the centre of the postcode area as opposed to being centred on specific buildings. However, if you are using our service to show a map of your property and would like the arrow to point directly at it, simply click on the location where you would like the arrow to point: the map should now be centred there. More information on how to link to us is detailed here.
There are two main reasons for this to occur:-
1) You are using a PO Box.
Typically, our maps will show a warning in red text underneath that the map is less likely to be accurate, stating the reason. Postcodes do change from time to time, and there will be some discrepency until we update our data.
We use several sources of data for our maps. Although we choose the best data souces available, these are not 100% accurate, whether they be slightly out of date, or road names contain typos, etc. Unfortunately, we are unable to manually update/alter our map data.
We update our maps quarterly or whenever new data is available, whichever is most frequent.
The quick answer is: Typically six months, occasionally longer.
Once the post code area is more formally defined, it is then surveyed, and it's geographic location is noted. When our data providers publish their next set of data with the new information on, the new postcode and map will be available on our site.
When a user clicks on the link on your website, they are automatically redirected by our webserver to the real location of the file. When a browser does not honour this request, it is sent to an intermediate page that then redirects them to the correct page. We are currently trying to identify why browsers sometimes fail to honour the request, and will fix this issue in due course.
Unfortunately, due to changes in licensing, we are unable to provide the medium scale as a free service. The smaller and larger scales (zoom=1, zoom=5 respectively) are still available. If you would like to continue using the medium scale from your website, then please consider our embedded mapping service.
For users of Internet Explorer:-
If you wish to block all cookies, it is a similar process. Select Tools from the menu.Then select Internet Options. Click on the Privacy tab. Click on the top of the slider so "Block All Cookies" appears next to it. Please be aware that blocking all cookies might affect the way certain websites work.
